I began studying Classical North Indian music via sitar in Boston starting in 1973. I was immediately told by my teacher that "There aren't any instrument makers around here so you will have to maintain your instruments yourself." To that end, I studied and learned all manner of techniques to repair and maintain Indian stringed instruments. While I still pick up the sitar, my main musical focus is now learning rudra vin through my original teacher.
